The 15th National Meeting of Student Ombudsmen took place on September 10 and 11 at the Coimbra Institute of Engineering (ISEC). The meeting’s theme, “Human Rights in Higher Education,” reflected a growing concern and a persistent challenge within the academic context: promoting the full inclusion of all students, free from discrimination and with equal opportunities for academic success and well-being.
Over the course of two days, the meeting brought together representatives from various higher education entities, including the Coordinating Council of Polytechnic Higher Education Institutes, the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities, the Portuguese Association of Private Education, the National Federation of Polytechnic Higher Education Student Associations (FNAEESP), the Institute for Higher Education (IES), the National Council for Pedagogical Innovation in Higher Education (CNIPES), and the More Inclusive Higher Education Group, among others. Viewing Student Ombudsperson offices as spaces for welcoming, integration, respect, valuing diversity, active listening, and participation, the various higher education stakeholders reflected on respect for human rights within their institutions.
Beyond facilitating the exchange of insights and experiences among representatives from various higher education institutions, the meeting made it possible to identify procedures, highlight best practices, and review existing policies. Above all, it contributed to building an academic community that promotes human dignity and values—and gives a voice to—everyone who lives, works, learns, and conducts research within it.
ESHTE was represented by its Ombudsperson, Professor Paula Rama da Silva, who was also elected to the governing bodies of the National Network of Student Ombudspersons (RPE).
