ESHTE celebrates World Doctor's Day with a visit do a jewel of senatorial architecture

In the wake of the celebration of World Doctors' Day, which took place last weekend, the final-year students of the Tourism Information degree made an extracurricular visit to the perimeter of the Sant’Ana Orthopedic Hospital on the morning of October 17, 2026.

Realized within the scope of the English V course and guided by Professor Cristina Carvalho, they recalled Dr. Dalgado and the 15th International Congress of Medicine of 1906, the natural benefits and therapeutic equipment that characterized the coastal landscape of Parede in the early decades of the 20th century.

Focusing attention on coastal sanatorial architecture at the dawn of the 1900s, while traversing Sant’Ana (a masterpiece in Art Nouveau that stemmed from the efforts of Dr. Sousa Martins and the patronage of the Chamiço and Biester), the future professionals were able to enjoy spaces of spiritual nature (such as the private chapel), therapeutic incidence (such as the cure galleries), and sociability for the then convalescents (such as the magnificent Winter Garden). Contemporary literary and cinematic references were also retrieved.

ESHTE must thank the managing entity of the perimeter, the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, for the significant pedagogical opportunity granted to its students, thus linking classroom theory with practical and direct knowledge of transversal linguistic, technical, cultural, and heritage-related incidents.

Our thanks.
