In response to a request for help from the A.J.U. - Jerónimo Usera Foundation, ESHTE organised an action to collect food and hygiene items during the 2020 Christmas season.
The A.J.U. - Jerónimo Usera Foundation's mission is to develop actions and projects that actively contribute to the integral promotion of the human person and the family, paying special attention to the most disadvantaged and marginalised in the community.
"We are living through times of great challenge, which are getting worse for families in situations of greater vulnerability. We have come to contact you because we believe you can help us strengthen our capacity to respond to the 1,029 people we have accompanied this year.
We've been able to count on your help with various initiatives and we'd like to propose a challenge for this Christmas, which will certainly be a different Christmas for each of us.
In 2017 we launched Mercearia do Bairro (Neighbourhood Grocery), a project that in 2019 managed to provide a response to 314 families, corresponding to 547 people.
Mercearia do Bairro aims to be a cosy space where families can choose the food and hygiene items they need, giving them greater freedom of choice and also reducing food waste. The main objective is to promote the logic of autonomy, dignity and empowerment for each family, while at the same time reducing food waste.
Since March of this year, the number of families requesting food support has increased by around 40 per cent, and the AJU Foundation has endeavoured to respond in the best way possible to all those who request our help.
We would therefore like to challenge you to develop a food collection campaign for the Neighbourhood Grocery so that the AJU Foundation can continue to respond to the needs of the families we help."
