Publication Featuring Contribution from ESHTE Wins International Award at Gourmand Awards in Cascais

The publication "Experiencing and Envisioning Food: Designing for Change," published by CRC Press/Taylor & Francis Group, was awarded first place in the "Best Food Design Theory Book in the World" category at the most recent Gourmand Awards, held this year at the Estoril Congress Center as part of the Cascais World Food Summit.

Co-edited by Maria José Pires, a professor at the Estoril School of Hotel Management and Tourism (ESHTE), the book brings together research in the fields of gastronomy, food design, sustainability, and social practices, and is the result of the 3rd International Congress on Food Design and Food Studies (EFOOD 2022), held in Lisbon.

The distinction is particularly significant because it is the first time the Gourmand Awards ceremony has been held in Portugal, bringing together more than 800 gastronomy professionals from 82 countries, from June 18th to 21st. Created in 1995 by Édouard Cointreau, the Gourmand Awards are widely recognized as the "Oscars of cookbooks," annually honoring the best books and editorial projects in the field of gastronomy.

In addition to co-editing, ESHTE is represented in several chapters of the book, with articles written by the institution's faculty and students:

"Co-creating a meaningful food literary experience. A Taste of Cascais," by Maria José Pires, Ricardo Bonacho, Cláudia Mataloto, and António Ribeiro
"The 'Matchmaker': From food & literary studies to reception & memory studies," by Alcinda Pinheiro de Sousa, Elena Bollinger, Maria José Pires, and Ricardo Bonacho
"Depicting the Setúbal Peninsula cuisine. Influences from the sea, mountains, and river in the regional food and restaurant models," by Fábio Pereira, Maria José Pires, and Maria Manuela Guerra
"Development and acceptance of sourdough breads fermented by endogenous yeasts of Pyrus communis, Malus domestica, and Pistacia lentiscus," by Paulo Vicente, Maria José Pires, and Nelson Félix
The publication is available in open access and can be consulted at this link.

The next edition of the Gourmand Awards will take place later this year in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, continuing a tradition that has promoted the international appreciation of gastronomic culture and its actors for three decades.
