On September 22nd, students from the 1st and 2nd editions of the Postgraduate Program in Literary Tourism at the Estoril School of Hospitality and Tourism (ESHTE) participated in the 2nd Literary Route "Raised from the Ground": Resistance – "João Mau-Tempo" and the Struggle of the Alentejo Agricultural Proletariat.
The initiative, promoted by the José Saramago Foundation in partnership with the Montemor-o-Novo City Hall, took participants to explore the locations that served as the backdrop for the most memorable episodes of José Saramago's novel. The tour was enriched by a historical and social contextualization of the period, as well as testimonies from real men and women who inspired the novel's characters.
In addition to revisiting the fictional universe created by the Nobel Prize winner for Literature, the script also presented biographical aspects of Saramago's stay in Alentejo in 1976, a period in which he collected experiences and references that would give rise to his first great novel.
