Tourism Management students explore Portugal on a study visit focused on Sustainable Tourism

In an initiative to prepare future tourism professionals, Tourism Management students went on an educational journey through the charms of Portugal from 30 April to 5 May. The study visit, which took in emblematic tourist spots such as Porto, Régua, Lousã, Covilhã and Alqueva, not only provided an enriching experience but also emphasised the importance of sustainable tourism.

Guided by local experts, organisations and tourism companies, the students immersed themselves in the cultural and natural diversity that the country has to offer. From the Douro to the Alqueva, each stop was an opportunity to learn about the principles of sustainable tourism and environmental preservation practices.

On their visit to the city of Porto and the WOW development, the students explored urban revitalisation efforts and the promotion of responsible tourism. In Régua, they discovered the secrets of Port wine production and the importance of sustainable agriculture on the slopes of the Douro.

Lousã and Covilhã offered an immersion in the cultural heritage and landscape of inland Portugal, highlighting the need to develop tourism in such a way as to preserve the authenticity of local communities, but also to know how to build contemporaneity into the destination so that it remains attractive to tourists.

Finally, the visit to Alqueva provided an insight into the potential of nature and adventure tourism and the importance of sustainable management of water resources. For the students, this experience not only enriched their practical knowledge of the tourism sector but also prepared them for the challenges of a constantly evolving labor market. With the growing demand for sustainable practices, the ability to understand and implement responsible tourism strategies is essential to guarantee the future of the sector.
